The 50th Anniversary Grant Program

  • Q
I have input basic information into the application form halfway through, but cannot save it.
    A
You can save once you have input information in the required items marked with asterisk *
  • Q
I’d like to revise my project proposal because I found some mistakes in the basic information after I submitted it.
    A
Once you submitted your project proposal, no revisions can be made to the basic information. The “save” function is used to save the basic information temporarily. Pressing the “edit” will allow you to rewrite and save information repeatedly.
  • Q
[Joint Research] The project representative hopes to do application and research in English, and will be unable to disseminate outcomes in Japanese. Is the representative sill eligible to apply?
    A
The representative is eligible to apply despite difficulty in communicating in Japanese, as long as other members of the project team can disseminate outcomes in Japanese. Please state clearly in the project proposal how you plan to communicate outcomes in Japanese to Japan.
  • Q
Would it be possible to apply for the grant even if I participated in multiple projects as a team member?
    A
Yes, but please list up only those who participate in the project actively as members. Name lending without substance is not acceptable.
  • Q
What kind of project outcomes does the Toyota Foundation evaluate highly?
    A
The Foundation places emphasis on whether an expected output is most congruous with the content of the proposed project described in the application form or the way in which such an output will be disseminated. It is also desirable that outputs from Joint Research Project should include dissemination beyond the scope of academic contributions.
  • Q
The planned project proposal is not likely to produce results in the immediate future as its final goal is set to be achieved 50 years ahead. Even so, is it okay to apply?
    A
Yes. The proposal is required to make a compelling case by presenting a path toward that future state 50 years from now and to show within the grant period ways to disseminate an expected outcome contributing to that final goal in the future.
  • Q
What exactly does “human society 50 years ahead” mean?
    A
Please refer to the Project Objective and describe what an applicant’s interpretation of “human society 50 years ahead” is like in your research proposal.
  • Q
Is it necessary to envision a society exactly 50 years from now?
    A
No. What is meant by “50 years ahead” in this grant program is intended to encourage applicants to have such a long-term perspective.
  • Q
We have many team members and cannot list them all up in the allotted space of the project proposal form. What should we do?
    A
Please prioritize and list only principal  project team members in the project proposal form without modifying the layout. Please indicate briefly in the section for “Project Team” that other non- principal  members are involved.
  • Q
Do you accept a project proposal created in color?
    A
The use of color printing is okay, but please understand that some selection committee members view the proposals printed in black and white.
  • Q
Is it okay to insert a hyperlink into the project proposal?
    A
Including a hyperlink is okay, but please understand that some selection committee members view the proposals printed on paper and thus cannot see linked websites.
  • Q
Is it okay to post overhead costs in the budget?
    A
No. Those costs not directly related to the proposed project and general administrative costs, including overhead expenses, are not accepted as part of a budget.
  • Q
[Joint Research] Is it acceptable that we pay personnel costs to the amount of hours the project representative and team members spend doing research?
    A
Yes. Personnel costs that are deemed appropriate in light of the proposed project can be reported as such in the budget. Please do not report in the budget personnel costs for those who are professional researchers such as full-time university professors or institutional researchers. (Honorariums for activities such as lectures or interviews can be reported in the budget.)
  • Q
[Individual Research] Is it okay to pay personnel costs to the amount of hours spent doing research?
    A
Yes. You can report such costs up to 50% of the overall budget. But please refrain from doing so if you are a professional researcher (a full-time university professor, an institutional researcher, or other similar professions).
  • Q
Is it okay for the Toyota Foundation to pay the grant money into a bank account of the organization I am affiliated with?
    A
This grant program is designed to provide grants to individuals, and thus the payment of the grant money will not be made directly to the university, organization, or company that they are affiliated with. After the representative receive the money from the Toyota Foundation, he/she may transfer it to an affiliated organization or other members.
  • Q
Is it okay to delegate the management of the grant money to my affiliated organization?
    A
In principle, no. If you belong to a national university or if you are unable to manage the grant money by yourself due to other special circumstances, please consult personally with the Foundation’s office after your application is selected.
  • Q
Is there any code of ethics that I can refer to when applying for the grant program?
    A
The Toyota Foundation does not define code of ethics, so please draw up your project proposal based on generally-accepted research ethics. The Foundation may cancel the grant provision when it finds a serious error in the project proposal. Please be very careful not to make any descriptions that can constitute misconduct in research.

  • Q
Is it possible to seek prior consultation with the Toyota Foundation before applying?
    A
No. The Foundation does not offer prior consultation services for The 50th Anniversary Grant Program. Please contact us via email if you cannot find relevant information in the Q&As section.
