This book was published in Mongolia as the result of the project funded by Research Grant Program 2013.

Since the shift in Mongolia to a market economy, Ulaanbaatar, the capital city, has developed rapidly. The city’s population has grown from 600 thousand in 1990 to 1.3 million in 2016. Because of the sharp population increase and the lack of housing supply, half of the population dwell in the “ger” areas on the periphery of the city, living in traditional nomadic tents (gers) or self-build houses.

In recent years, environmental problems caused by the ger areas have become more serious in Ulaanbaatar.
“Development and community of Ger area: Guidance to Ger area for young people” is the publication that introduces the historical background and present situation of the ger areas. It also describes the work of volunteer groups, which some residences in the ger areas organize nowadays. Such groups cooperate and strive to improve livelihoods or solve problems in the local area.
