This book, “Common Underwater Plants in Coastal Areas of Thailand” is published as an effort of the project, “An Ecological Survey of Underwater Forests and Production of a Pictorial Guidebook of Marine Plants in Thailand: Protecting the Cradle of Marine Life” (Representative: Dr. Isao Tsutsui) which the Toyota Foundation aided through our Research Grant Program during the fiscal 2006.

Dr. Tsutsui has conducted several ecological researches at coasts of Southeast Asia over 10 years; studies on marine plants and prawn cultivations to name a few. Although marine plants play socially and ecologically important role in the nature, research accumulations on the field of marine algae has been limited, due to the lower academic and tourism interests it receives compared with other natural resources such as the mangrove and the coral.

This publication focuses on the coastal area of Thailand which is one of the precious ecological resources with abundant marine plants that provides various benefits to locals. With detailed descriptions and pictures, this book identifies about 120 marine algae species which exist in the concerned area.

All pages are in full color, and descriptions are written in both English and Thai as this book aims to also win attentions of Thai locals and provide them further understanding of resources around them.
